Dave Shoger Appointed Victoria’s New Fire Chief

A firefighter stands in front of a truck.Victoria, Minnesota — Dave Shoger has been appointed as the new Fire Chief for the Victoria Fire Department and Public Safety Director for the City of Victoria. In this position, Chief Shoger will lead the community’s firefighters as well as provide strategic direction and guidance for Victoria’s public safety and leadership teams.

“Dave has been a pillar of our community and a leader at the City for years and we’re looking forward to seeing how he will shape this role,” noted Dana Hardie, Victoria’s City Manager. “His commitment to making sure everyone comes home, as well as his dedication to improving emergency services and community relationships, made him stand out amongst his peers during the search process.”

When many people only meet a firefighter on one of the worst days of their lives, Chief Shoger makes it a priority for the community to get to know the team and learn more about fire safety. Last year, the department had 438 calls for service, with 76 of those for fire-related calls. The best way to fight a fire is to prevent it in the first place.

“If you do meet Chief Shoger when he’s on an emergency call, you’ll be met with respect, empathy, and compassion,” added Hardie. “He leads with his heart.”

"I am deeply honored to be appointed as the new Fire Chief of Victoria,” said Chief Shoger. “Our duty remains clear: to protect and serve our community with the highest standards of safety and customer service.”

As the community of Victoria continues to grow, the emergency services needs will continue to evolve. With 2 full-time staff and 31 paid-on-call firefighters, the Victoria Fire Department is transitioning to a model that allows for more flexibility for the team while ensuring that there is always someone to answer the call when needed. One of the biggest impacts for this transition will be the new Victoria Fire Station planned for the corner of Kochia Lane and County Road 18 which will provide a safe facility for the department as it grows over the next 50 years, as well as sleeping quarters to support overnight shifts.

“Together, I believe we can build on our past successes while embracing changes and tackling new challenges,” added Chief Shoger. “I am excited to serve alongside my fellow firefighters to ensure the safety and well-being of our city. I am proud to be a part of this great organization and this wonderful community."

Since joining the Victoria Fire Department in 2008, Chief Shoger has held multiple positions including Assistant Fire Chief for the last 6 years. In this position, he provided operational leadership as well as direction during emergency medical and rescue services.

Chief Shoger has served the community of Victoria in other ways over the years, including as part of the public works department since early 2017, and serving as the Public Works Director since September of 2019. Victoria Public Works is responsible for managing and maintaining many vital city services, functions, and infrastructure including water, sewer, streets, storm sewer, public facilities, and city parks.

The City of Victoria performed a national search for the Fire Chief and Public Safety Director position due to its impact within the community. Chief Shoger steps into his new role on June 1, 2024.
